Barn Conversion

Westcountry Barn Conversion

South West England

A medieval theme was the design brief for the conversion of this 18th-century threshing barn in the Westcountry. Stuart Interiors worked directly with the client to design and make bespoke joinery and furniture for the Great Hall, Dining Hall, Kitchen and Mezzanine.

In the Great Hall, solid oak plank and muntin panelling was inspired by a Welsh photograph of period joinery with an ogee arched opening, alongside a medieval-style hooded stone fireplace. In the Kitchen, an original medieval cupboard from Aubazine, France, provided design inspiration throughout — a replica serves as a store cupboard, and arched doors recur across the kitchen joinery, with specially designed hand-forged ironwork as a key feature.

The oak and steel spiral staircase rises to a mezzanine above, its shaped slats inspired by an original Spanish spiral staircase.
