The site has likely held a house since the Norman period, dating this project's setting to the 11th century. Stuart Interiors was commissioned to make Tudor-style solid oak panelling for the Great Hall and a personalised overmantel for the East Hall, alongside oak furniture and hand-forged ironwork.
The overmantel is late 16th-century in style, its carvings drawing on historic panels in the local church, with polychrome decoration displaying the owner's family coats of arms. The panelling was inspired by original joinery at Muchelney Abbey, cared for by English Heritage.
Many panels feature hand-carved parchemin decoration, a stylised motif popular across Europe in the 16th century. Careful finishing gives the oak a patina that successfully merges the new joinery into its ancient surroundings.
